When It Comes to Politics, Intelligence Squared Is Closing Our Minds: Google and Facebook Do Not the Internet Make – eVoter.com Changing Our Actions

In Blog Posts, In the News, Investor Relations, Print and Online Articles on April 23, 2012 at 8:42 pm

Tuesday night’s Intelligence Squared debate entitled “When It Comes To Politics, the Internet Is Closing Our Minds” had little to do with politics, and treated the internet as if most political attitudes were driven by Google and Facebook.

The real subject of the debate was the personalization of the internet, and maybe incidentally, the political impact of personalization, that is the effectiveness of Google and Facebook driving (through filters) users to websites which catered to their individual preferences. In other words — pushing conservatives to conservative web sites and liberals to liberal websites. One set of debaters foresaw major problem arising from the filtering process; the opposite side welcomed the filtering, and foresaw it only as, at worst, a “theoretical” problem.

To me, the question seemed both overstated and insignificant. As a journalist, I always believed that objective readers/viewers always saw our news through the eyes of their own prejudices, though they refused to admit them. When I was growing up (until 1950), New York still had seven newspapers. Readers gravitated towards the paper that most confirmed his/her points of view. Before World War II, The Daily News and the Journal American were anti-New Deal isolationist papers, mostly read by Catholics; The Daily Mirror was internationalist, pro-Roosevelt, and mostly read by Jews. The Herald Tribune was Republican, mildly internationalist and read mostly by Wasps; The Times was mildly Democratic, strongly internationalist and read mostly by Jews. The Sun was the most conservative of all papers, and read mostly by the most conservative members of all races and creeds, each group searching for reinforcement of its own opinions.

Last Tuesday’s debaters acknowledged that consumers have the right to choose the media that most accords with their biases, but the key word is “choose.” One side was afraid that Google and Facebook are weighing the choices in favor of what they perceived as the users’ biases. The other side, that was no big deal, the users were going to find what they were looking for on their own.

It seemed to me, much ado about nothing. The debaters were all smart men, and they loved to talk, but their talk had very little to do with politics. Three of them had previously written books about the internet, and proud to quote from them, but I didn’t hear the word “politics” often, if at all, in their quotes. The fourth one, a journalist who had in 2007 had been named “Web Editor of the Year,” rarely mentioned politics either.

I had gone to the event with the hope that I would hear something about what impact the internet might have on the 2012 election, because I had previously learned about a new website designed specifically to inform voters about their choices and permit candidates to advertise to its audience. It’s called eVoter, and claims to be nonpartisan. (I want to make it clear that I was asked by eVoter to invest in the company and serve on its board. I declined, because I’m currently overly involved in other things.) Nevertheless, I introduce it here because I believe it will have a positive effect on the political process.

eVoter plans to provide every voter in every voting district in the United States with a list of all the candidates, from dog catcher to president, who will appear on his/her ballot next November. (eVoter is currently providing lists of primary nominees to voters state by state.) It’s greatest virtue might be its simplest — it will provide every voter with the address of his/her polling place.

eVoter also offers candidates the opportunity to provide brief biographies and accepts endorsements and advertisements from organizations that back the candidates. Since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United case gives PACs and other organizations, even foreign companies, the right to back their favored candidates, eVoter is likely to be very profitable very quickly.

Internet advertising has one great advantage over other forms of advertising — it has no deadline. In the past, most political advertising time was purchased weeks or, at best, days in advance. In an era of constant polling, it was difficult to reframe ads in accordance to the polls or adapt ads to meet new attacks from rival camps. In the post eVoter world, political advisers have the ability to create new messages, concoct new talking points, until the polls close in every state in the Union.

Intelligence Squared suggested that “When It Comes To Politics, The Internet Is Closing Our Minds,” I suggest that sites like eVoter will be changing our actions.

Online eVoter aims to enlighten 2012 electorate with candidate, campaign information

In Illinois, In the News, Posts by State or Region, Print and Online Articles on March 3, 2012 at 12:01 pm

DECATUR — “Where’s my polling place again?”

The number of people asking themselves — and Google — that question before elections can be in the tens of thousands, according to Adam Kravitz.

He would know. Kravitz is the CEO and founder of eVoter, a nonpartisan election information site that can tell voters who is on their ballots, what those candidates say about themselves and what organizations have endorsed them.

“There’s still kind of this thought in political campaigns that the Internet is for, you know, young voters … when in fact, it’s how you reach everybody,” Kravitz said.

The service is accessible through the Herald & Review website, www.herald-review.com.

“It’s a good service for our readers and helps keep them informed,” said Dave Dawson, Herald & Review managing editor. “They can go to our website and find a lot of information about candidates in our databases and also plug their addresses into eVoter and get a sample ballot. It must be doing its job, because we are getting a lot of traffic going to eVoter.”

Candidates and organizations can create profiles and list endorsements on the website for free. Kravitz said they must enter their ID numbers and the profiles are reviewed by staff to make sure they are legitimate.

Illinois was the first state to debut the service during its 2010 primary. Now, Kravitz said eVoter has expanded to all 50 states, although it remains particularly useful in Illinois, where the information online varies from county to county.

Kravitz said the service offers a centralized location to learn about all the candidates on the ballot, including those that do not particularly get a lot of media coverage.

“People are going to come into the booth, and it’s going to take them 10, 15 minutes to vote. By the time they get to these races at the bottom they’re going to be tired, uninterested,” Kravitz said. “… If a local candidate can touch these people at the time they’re actually interested, at the time they’re actually making their decision, this is a huge opportunity for down-ballot candidates to reach voters.”

“The Holy Grail of social media from a candidate’s viewpoint is to ‘go viral,’ get noticed and hope that exposure translates into votes,” said Adam Kravitz, CEO and co-founder of the nonpartisan election information website eVoter.

And having volunteers promote the agenda of the candidate or party is “more organic and less planned,” he said.

“The fact is that many of the young, eager volunteers and staffers who are drawn to political campaigns and organizing are the kind of people that are fully immersed in the Facebook and Twitter culture,” Kravitz said. “They are surrounded by a universe of ‘friends’ and ‘followers’ [who] comment and re-tweet in kind, resulting in a viral effect.”

Oklahoma Republican Party offers online straw polling with eVoter.com

In In the News, Oklahoma, Posts by State or Region, Print and Online Articles on December 5, 2011 at 2:41 pm

The Oklahoma Republican Party has launched the inaugural Oklahoma Presidential Straw Poll. The poll will be an online straw poll conducted with the assistance of eVoter, a nonpartisan election information website.
“Many states hold presidential straw polls every four years creating national publicity and financial support for their respective state,” said OKGOP Chairman Matt Pinnell. “We thought it was time the ‘reddest state in America’ had a straw poll of its own. Nothing could be a more accurate barometer of Republican primary voters than to poll those in the most conservative state in the country.”
Oklahoma received notoriety as the “reddest state in America” after all 77 Oklahoma counties went red in 2008, garnering the highest percentage of the vote in the country for the McCain/Palin ticket. Until December 5, voters will be able to cast a vote for their preferred presidential candidate for a $5 contribution to the Oklahoma Republican Party.
“In other states, straw poll voters can end up spending hundreds of dollars in travel costs and ballot fees in order to vote,” said Pinnell. “We wanted to provide a way for voters to show their support for their candidate from the comfort of their own living room.”

Voters can cast their vote at www.oklahomastrawpoll.com. Results will be announced December 5 at a “Victory 2012″ Rally featuring special guest GOP presidential candidate Herman Cain. The Rally will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Oklahoma City Marriott at 3233 Northwest Expressway.

Oklahoma is getting in the game of predicting which republican presidential candidate will be the last man or woman standing.

The Oklahoma Republican Party is launching the first ever Presidential Straw Poll.

Chairman Matt Pinnell says it’s time for the reddest state to give the whole country an accurate prediction.

He says, “Nothing could be a more accurate barometer of Republican primary voters than to poll those in the most conservative state in the country.”

Oklahoma got the label of the ‘reddest state in America’ after all 77 Oklahoma counties went red in 2008, garnering the highest percentage of the vote in the country for the McCain/Palin ticket.

Now, republican leaders hope to gain more notoriety with the new poll.

Pinnell says, “Many states hold presidential straw polls every four years creating national publicity and financial support for their respective state.”

Voters will be able to vote November 21st through December 5th.

Ron Paul Wins Illinois Republican Presidential Straw Poll

In Blog Posts, Illinois, In the News, Posts by State or Region, Print and Online Articles on November 6, 2011 at 11:29 am

Texas Congressman Ron Paul won Saturday’s statewide presidential straw poll with 52 percent of the vote. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney carried the state’s in-person voting with 35 percent.

“I congratulate Congressman Paul on his victory,” said Illinois Republican Party Chairman Pat Brady. “It is clear Illinois Republicans are gearing up tremendous election year in 2012.”

Romney earned 7 percent of the online vote, while Paul earned 8 percent of the in-person vote. Paul had 66.5 percent of online votes.

Businessman and Tea Party favorite Herman Cain got 15 percent of the online vote and 35 percent of the in-person vote.

Brady and the party’s highest-ranking officer, U.S. Senator Mark Kirk, had identified a statewide presidential straw poll winner hours before results were tallied Saturday.

They weren’t talking specific candidates in the crowded primary field, but the state party itself.

The poll — at least momentarily — had pivoted the conversation from the Iowa and New Hampshire primaries to Illinois, fueling races up and down the ticket with both enthusiasm and campaign cash.

“Today’s straw poll was an excellent opportunity to showcase our party’s strength one year out of the election,” Brady. “I am pleased with today’s turnout and look forward to building on our successes from 2010.”

With 3,649 votes, the Illinois Presidential Straw Poll surpassed states like Ohio, Florida and California that held straw polls earlier this year.

In Arlington Heights Saturday morning, Wheeling Township Republican headquarters was packed with about 200 local residents who, as they were standing in line waiting to cast votes, had the chance to grab a cup of coffee and a doughnut and to bend the ears of Republican candidates, including Kirk, 10th District Congressman Bob Dold, state Rep. David Harris and Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Dan Patlak.

Kirk said he conceived the idea for the poll last year as a way of making it clear that the state is more than what he calls a “political ATM” for presidential candidates who view Illinois as an electoral write-off for President Barack Obama.

Votes cost $5 apiece and could be cast throughout the week online or in person at township party headquarters Saturday. In addition to Arlington Heights, Kirk and Brady made stops in Palatine, Downers Grove, Libertyville and Lemont.

Kirk said he noticed a variance in “favorites” in different pockets, with North Shore Republicans turning out for Utah Gov. John Huntsman and Chicago residents backing Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

Others in the Northwest suburbs, including Kevin Kilgore of Prospect Heights, cast ballots for Cain, despite recent sexual harassment allegations.

Kirk, who had weeks before described the GOP presidential primary as a two-man race between Romney and Texas governor Rick Perry, said he believes Perry, after recent debate flubs, will be unable to regain momentum.

Wheeling GOP Chair Ruth O’Connell, who is also a Perry delegate, said, “You have to look at who you like, but who’s electable.”

In 2007, a much smaller poll was held by the Illinois GOP at the state fairgrounds in Springfield.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney won that time around, with 40 percent of the 922 votes. Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson came in second.

Adam Kravitz, CEO of eVoter, the Florida-based online election service that coordinated the online voting effort, said news of Illinois’ GOP straw poll had reached other states, including Oklahoma, that were hoping to hold polls of their own.

Voting in Arlington Heights, Charlie Glick of Lake Zurich tried to sum the process up for his young son, Kaizer, who had accompanied his father.

“I tried to explain to him that it’s a vote before a vote before a vote,” Glick said.
